Ear cleaning basics for dogs and cats
How often, what to use, and the signs that something more is going on.

Healthy ears usually look pale pink and don't smell. Most pets only need occasional cleaning.
Signs to note
Head shaking, a strong smell, dark wax or scratching at the ears are worth a quick check.
Keep it gentle
Use a vet-recommended cleaner and cotton pads. Never push cotton buds into the ear canal.
