I'm really hoping someone here can help me or share similar experiences. I've got a 7-year-old tabby, Max, who's currently battling a UTI. The vet prescribed meloxicam to help him with the pain and inflammation. We’ve been giving it to him as directed, but I've started noticing he’s been vomiting more frequently since he started the medication. It just breaks my heart to see him like this, and I'm wondering if anyone else has had their cat react this way to meloxicam. Could the vomiting be a side effect of the medication? Or is it possible it's tied to the UTI itself? I plan to call the vet tomorrow, but any advice or shared experiences in the meantime would be greatly appreciated. I just want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to make Max comfortable and healthy again. Thanks so much.
Hello there,
I'm glad you reached out with your concerns about your cat. Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that's sometimes used to manage pain or inflammation in cats, including discomfort from conditions like a urinary tract infection (UTI). However, vomiting can indeed be a side effect.
Vomiting in cats taking meloxicam might occur due to stomach irritation or gastrointestinal upset, which are potential side effects of this medication. If your cat has started vomiting since beginning meloxicam, it could very well be related.
At home, ensure your cat stays hydrated. Dehydration can worsen when a cat vomits, so encourage drinking water or offer some chicken broth (without onions or garlic) to keep her hydrated. Feeding smaller, more frequent meals can also help settle her stomach.
Watch for signs like persistent vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, or any changes in behavior. These could indicate a more serious issue, possibly related to the medication or the UTI itself, and would require immediate attention.
Be sure to consult with a vet if the vomiting continues or worsens to determine whether continuing the medication is safe. I recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet to discuss this issue further, ensuring your kitty gets the best care possible.
