By Dial A Vet Veterinary Team

We've partnered with Basepaws, the cat and dog DNA testing company that is part of Zoetis, so pet owners can understand their pet's DNA and then talk it through with a real vet. From 2 November 2026 (US time), every Basepaws cat DNA test and dog DNA test bundle includes 30 days of unlimited Dial A Vet video consults. The bundle is available now on Basepaws' cat and dog test pages and is featured on the Basepaws home page. You buy the bundle from Basepaws, receive a Dial A Vet activation code, and redeem it at dialavet.com/activate to start talking to real vets and vet nurses online.

Key takeaways

  • The Basepaws partnership pairs a Basepaws cat or dog DNA test with 30 days of unlimited Dial A Vet video consults.
  • Buy the bundle from Basepaws, then redeem your activation code at dialavet.com/activate.
  • Your 30 days start when you activate, not when you buy.
  • A DNA result is not a diagnosis. Our team helps you understand your report and work out what to raise with your regular vet.

Why we partnered with Basepaws

A pet DNA test can tell you a lot: the breeds in your pet's family tree, the genes behind their coat and build, and genetic markers linked to certain health conditions. What a report can't do is sit down with you and explain what it means for the cat or dog asleep on your couch.

That conversation is what we do every day. Our real vets and vet nurses talk with pet owners by video about everyday questions, and a DNA report naturally raises plenty of them. Bringing the two together means the questions get answered while they are fresh, by people who understand both the science and the animal in front of them.

What is in the bundle

  • A Basepaws Breed + Health DNA test. A simple cheek swab you collect at home and send back to Basepaws.
  • 30 days of unlimited Dial A Vet video consults. Talk to a vet online as often as you need during your 30 days.

Got two pets? Basepaws also offers a two-test bundle (2 DNA tests + 60 days of vet consults). Each of the two activation codes gives 30 days, and you can activate the second when the first 30 days end.

What the Basepaws reports cover

According to Basepaws, the cat DNA test (Breed + Health) checks 64 health markers, 50 trait markers and 21 cat breeds, and includes an oral health report covering bad breath, periodontal disease and tooth resorption.

The dog DNA test (Breed + Health) checks 280+ health markers, 30+ genetic traits and 300+ dog breeds. Dog reports also group ancestry into lineages, which Basepaws describes as groups of dogs descended from common ancestors that predate modern breeds, often linked to a historical working role such as herding or scent hunting.

The full marker lists are on Basepaws' cat report and dog report pages.

What a vet consult adds to your pet's DNA results

Genetic reports are detailed, and some of the words in them can be unsettling the first time you read them. A marker linked to a heart or kidney condition does not mean your pet has that condition or will develop it. Many markers only matter in certain breeds, some need two copies of a gene variant to have any effect, and plenty of pets carrying a marker live long, healthy lives.

In a video consult, our vets and vet nurses can:

  • Walk you through what each section of your report means in plain language.
  • Explain the difference between a breed result, a trait and a health marker.
  • Help you work out which findings are worth mentioning to your regular vet, and which questions to bring.
  • Talk through general care for your pet's breed mix, from grooming and exercise to the signs worth keeping an eye on.

Our consults are general advice and teletriage. We don't diagnose conditions or prescribe medicines, and a DNA result is not a diagnosis. Your regular vet, who can examine your pet in person, is the right person to decide whether anything further is needed. Our aim is for you to walk into that appointment informed rather than worried.

"We're really excited to be working with Basepaws. A DNA report can be fascinating, and it often brings up questions too. We hope having a real vet or vet nurse to talk things through with makes those results a little easier to understand, and helps owners feel more confident about what to chat about with their regular vet."

Frequently asked questions

What is the Dial A Vet and Basepaws partnership?

We've partnered with Basepaws so that its cat and dog DNA test bundles include 30 days of unlimited Dial A Vet video consults. You can talk to a vet online about your pet's results and know what to raise with your regular vet.

Can a pet DNA test tell me if my pet is sick?

No. A DNA test looks for genetic markers, not current illness. A health marker can point to a higher or lower genetic risk, but it is not a diagnosis. If you are concerned about your pet's health, see your regular vet.

Can the Dial A Vet team diagnose or treat something flagged in my report?

No. Our real vets and vet nurses provide general advice and teletriage by video. They can help you understand your report and what to raise with your regular vet, but they don't diagnose, prescribe or treat conditions.

Which pets does this cover?

Cats and dogs. Basepaws offers a separate DNA test bundle for each.

When do my 30 days start?

Your 30 days of unlimited video consults start when you activate your code at dialavet.com/activate, not when you buy the bundle.

I'm having trouble activating my code. Who should I contact?

If you're having issues activating your code on the Dial A Vet website, please contact support@dialavet.com.au and let them know you received a code from Basepaws.
