I really need some advice or comforting words. I've been feeling super stressed about my golden retriever, Max, who's suddenly become terrified of fireworks. He's three years old now, and up until this year, he was totally chill with them. I live in a neighborhood where fireworks are pretty common because of all the festivals, and this new fear has been really challenging. Whenever he hears them, he starts shaking uncontrollably and tries to hide under the bed, which he never did before. It breaks my heart to see him so scared because he’s usually such a happy and energetic dog. I’ve tried comforting him and creating a safe space, but I feel so helpless. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening now and what else I can do to help him feel safe again? I just want my old Max back. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Hello there! It's not uncommon for some dogs to develop a fear of fireworks or loud noises around 3 years old. This change in behavior can be due to a few reasons. Dogs, much like people, can experience heightened anxiety as they age. A previously neutral or mildly scary event might become more alarming due to past experiences or a more sensitive response system.
Sometimes, a traumatic experience or even a build-up of exposure to similar noises, like thunderstorms, can contribute to this new fear. It's also possible that their hearing could have become more acute, making loud sounds more startling.
To help your pup during fireworks, consider creating a safe, quiet space where they can retreat. Playing calming music or using a white noise machine can help buffer the sound. Offering their favorite toy or a chew can also provide comfort.
Watch for signs like excessive panting, trembling, or hiding. These can indicate their fear response is strong. If they start exhibiting behaviors like trying to escape or harming themselves, it’s essential to intervene and consult with a professional.
If their fear seems to be worsening or if these at-home solutions don't help, please consider booking a video consult with Dial A Vet. We can explore other strategies together to keep your furry friend comfortable during fireworks.
