Question:

What are these bumps on my dogs belly/chest?

I’m really worried and hoping for some advice. I noticed some small, red bumps on my dog Max’s belly and chest when I was giving him a bath yesterday. They’re not super big, maybe the size of a pencil eraser, but there are quite a few of them, and they look a bit irritated. He doesn’t seem to be in any pain when I touch them, but he’s been scratching at them more than usual. I haven’t changed his diet recently or introduced any new products that might cause a reaction. Has anyone else experienced something like this with their dogs? Should I be taking him to the vet asap, or are there home remedies that might help until then? Max is a four-year-old lab mix, and this is the first time something like this has happened. I'm just a concerned dog mom trying to figure out the best thing to do. Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Hello there!

Thanks for reaching out about the bumps you've noticed on your dog’s belly and chest. I know how concerning any changes in your pet's skin can be. There are several possible reasons for these bumps, and I'm here to help you understand them.

One common cause is allergies—dogs can be allergic to foods, pollen, or even fleas, resulting in itchy, bumpy skin. Other possibilities include bacterial or fungal infections, which can occur if there's been any scratch or cut or due to hot and humid conditions. Sometimes, skin growths like benign cysts or warts also appear, particularly as dogs get older.

For now, you can take some simple steps at home. You might try bathing your dog with a gentle, hypoallergenic dog shampoo to soothe the skin and potentially wash away any allergens. Ensure his bedding and living areas are clean and free of dust or fleas.

However, if you notice the bumps multiplying rapidly, your dog seems particularly uncomfortable, the bumps ooze or change in appearance, or if your dog is very young or has other health issues, those are signs that it might be more serious and need veterinary attention.

I highly recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet to discuss these bumps further. This way, a vet can take a look and give you more specific advice tailored to your dog's needs.

Take care, and I hope your furry friend feels better soon!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
