Question:

Went to the vet to get my terriers eye checked out for infection because he was squinting. Vet prescribed Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Dexamethasone drops. His eye is fine now. We realized he has a really bad ear infection on the same side. Can I

I really need some advice. I recently took my terrier to the vet because he was squinting his eye a lot, and I was worried it might be an infection. The vet prescribed Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Dexamethasone drops, and thankfully, his eye is completely fine now. However, I just noticed that he seems to have developed a really nasty ear infection on the same side. I'm not sure if it's some weird coincidence or if there's a connection here. I still have a good amount of those eye drops left, and I'm wondering if I could use them for his ear as well? Has anyone else ever been in this situation before? I really want to help him feel better as soon as possible, but I don’t want to make a mistake and cause more harm. Any advice or experiences you could share would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:

Hello! It’s great that you’re looking out for your terrier’s health. While it might seem tempting to use the leftover eye drops for his ear infection, it's important not to do so. Eye medications are specifically formulated for the eyes and might not be safe or effective for ears. Using them can potentially harm his ear or worsen the infection.

Ear infections can be caused by various issues, ranging from bacteria and yeast to allergies or foreign bodies lodged in the ear. It’s best to have a vet examine his ear to determine the cause and prescribe the most appropriate treatment.

In the meantime, keep an eye on your terrier for symptoms like head shaking, pawing at the ear, redness, swelling, or a bad smell. Avoid cleaning the ear at home unless instructed by a vet, as improper cleaning can cause irritation or push debris further into the ear canal.

If his symptoms persist or worsen, I recommend setting up a video consult with a vet through Dial A Vet. They can guide you on next steps and ensure your furry friend gets the best care possible. Stay positive; you're doing a fantastic job taking care of him!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
