Question:

Smartfood Popcorn with my chihuahua

I'm really hoping someone here can help me out or give me some advice. I have an adorable, yet mischievous chihuahua named Chico, and we had a bit of a scare yesterday. I was snacking on some Smartfood popcorn while watching TV, and turned away for just a minute. Next thing I know, Chico had snagged a few pieces and was happily munching away. It was cute at first, but then I panicked because I wasn’t sure if it was safe for him. I’ve heard mixed opinions about dogs eating popcorn, and I'm especially worried about the cheese powder and other additives in Smartfood. Chico seems fine today, thankfully, but I’m still feeling anxious about it all. Can anyone tell me if I should be concerned or what to watch for in case he has a reaction? Thanks so much in advance!

Answer:

Hello there! It sounds like your chihuahua recently had an encounter with some Smartfood Popcorn. It's always a good idea to check in when our furry friends get into human snacks. Generally speaking, a few pieces of plain popcorn won't harm your dog, as long as it's free from any flavorings or additives like cheese, onion, or garlic, which can be toxic.

However, popcorn can be a choking hazard, especially for small dogs like chihuahuas, so it’s important to watch out for any coughing, gagging, or difficulty breathing. Also, too much popcorn can cause stomach upset, leading to symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea. Keep an eye on your little one for any of these signs.

At home, ensure your dog has plenty of fresh water to help with digestion. You might want to observe their eating habits; if they seem less interested in their food or display any unusual behavior, it might be time for a check-up.

If your chihuahua shows any signs of distress, such as vomiting, diarrhea, a swollen abdomen, or difficulty breathing, I recommend seeking veterinary advice as soon as possible.

For a more tailored assessment or if you have any lingering concerns, feel free to book a video consult with Dial A Vet. We’re here to help!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
