I don’t know what’s going on, and I feel terrible even asking this, but I’m really worried about how B is acting. This morning, my beloved dog A passed away suddenly right in front of B, and ever since, B has been behaving so strangely. B keeps pacing around, whining, and looking at the spot where A was… it’s breaking my heart to watch. A and B were super close, always sleeping together and sharing toys. I’m scared B might be blaming me or thinking I did something to hurt A. Has anyone else gone through something like this? I’m just so lost and could really use some advice.
I completely understand why you're worried. It's a tough situation to consider the mental and emotional state of our pets after something traumatic. While animals might not grasp the concept of "killing" in the way humans do, they are highly perceptive and can be deeply affected by changes in their environment and the absence of a companion.
Pet B might not specifically understand the act, but it could sense something significant happened, particularly if it witnessed the event or frequently interacted with Pet A. Animals often show signs of stress or grief when another pet is no longer around. These signs can include changes in behavior, like being more withdrawn, changes in appetite, or even searching for the lost companion.
At home, provide comfort and a stable routine for Pet B. Offer extra attention, playtime, and comforting spaces. Monitor their behavior closely for signs of stress or anxiety that don’t seem to improve, such as excessive vocalization, destructive behavior, or a refusal to eat.
If you're concerned about Pet B's well-being or if they display prolonged distress, it's a good idea to consult with a veterinarian who can provide tailored advice and reassurance. Please consider booking a video consult with Dial A Vet to discuss Pet B's specific needs in more detail.
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
