I’m really worried about my little Luna and hoping someone might have some advice. She’s a 5-month-old German Shepherd mix, and normally she’s a furry ball of chaos and energy. That part hasn’t changed one bit—she’s still tearing around the house like normal, chasing her toys and barking at everything that moves. But she’s completely stopped eating, and it’s really freaking me out. I usually feed her twice a day, and she would devour her meals in seconds. But for the last two days, she’s barely touched her kibble or even treats. I’ve tried switching brands, mixing in some wet food, even hand-feeding, but nothing seems to tempt her. Our vet is closed for the weekend, and I’m feeling a bit panicky. Has anyone else experienced something like this? Is it maybe just a phase or something serious I should be worried about? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Hi there! It’s great to hear that your puppy is full of energy and acting like her usual playful self. When a puppy refuses to eat, even though they seem fine otherwise, it can be a bit concerning but isn’t always a sign of something serious.
Picky eating in puppies can occur for several reasons, such as stress from a change in environment, teething discomfort, or a simple lack of appetite. Make sure her food is fresh and the bowl is clean, and try offering small amounts of a bland diet like boiled chicken and rice to see if she prefers something different. Sometimes, adding a little bit of warm water or broth to her usual food can make it more appealing as well.
However, please keep a close eye on her for any changes. If she starts showing signs like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or bloating, it could indicate a more serious issue, like an infection or an ingested foreign object, and would require immediate attention.
If her appetite doesn't improve over the next day or two, I’d recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. They can provide more tailored advice and help ensure she's just being a picky eater and isn’t dealing with anything more concerning.
