Please relieve my anxiety -- cat hasn't pooped in 3-4 days -- already saw a vet!!

I’m really hoping for some advice or reassurance because I'm seriously stressing out. My little furball, Max, hasn't used his litter box for a poop in about 3-4 days now, and it's freaking me out. We literally just got back from the vet, and although they said everything seemed fine, the worry is eating away at me. I've tried giving him wet food, and I've made sure he's drinking plenty of water, but still nothing. He's acting pretty normal otherwise—still playing and eating—but I can’t shake the feeling that something's wrong. Has anyone else experienced this with their cat? What else can I try to help him go? Should I be pushing the vet for more tests? Any advice would be so appreciated, thanks!

Answer

Hello there! I understand how worrying it can be when your feline friend hasn’t had a bowel movement in a few days. It’s good that you’ve already seen a vet, but let's discuss a few things that might help.

Cats can become constipated for a number of reasons, such as dehydration, dietary issues, hairballs, or even stress. Since your cat hasn't pooped in 3-4 days, consider making sure they are drinking plenty of water and have access to a clean, comfortable litter box. You might also try gently increasing fiber in their diet with pumpkin puree or canned wet food, which can provide hydration and help get things moving.

Keep a close eye on your cat for any signs of discomfort or distress, such as straining in the litter box, vocalizing, hiding, or changes in their eating habits. If your cat shows any of these signs or if they haven't had a bowel movement soon, it may be time for another check-in with a vet.

Remember, constipation can sometimes indicate more serious conditions, so it's important to monitor your furry friend closely. Don’t hesitate to book a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet to discuss any concerns or get additional guidance tailored to your cat's needs.
