Question:

My cat was euthanized today but it happened too fast and not like I wanted, I don't feel well

I’m really struggling with what happened today, and I could use some advice or comfort. My beloved cat, Whiskers, was euthanized, but it all happened so quickly and it wasn't how I imagined it at all. I thought I would have more time to say goodbye, but the vet said it would be painless if it was over swiftly. In my heart, I know I made the right choice because he was suffering so much, but the way it unfolded just feels wrong. I didn't get to hold him as long as I wanted to and now I'm left with this immense feeling of guilt and regret. Has anyone else experienced something like this? How do you cope with not having the closure you hoped for? I’m feeling lost and could really use some help processing all of this.

Answer:

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Losing a beloved pet can be incredibly tough, and it’s understandable to have mixed feelings about how the process unfolded. Euthanasia often comes up unexpectedly and can feel sudden, even when we’ve planned for it. It’s normal to feel a range of emotions—from sadness and confusion to regret about how things went.

Take comfort in knowing that euthanasia is designed to be peaceful and pain-free for pets. Cats can respond differently, and sometimes it takes them by surprise, making it feel quicker than anticipated. Rest assured that your veterinarian would have focused on making it as gentle as possible for your cat.

During this difficult time, it’s important to care for yourself. Surround yourself with friends and family or find a support group where you can express how you’re feeling. Creating a memento for your cat or sharing stories about them can also help in processing grief.

Watch for signs that your grief is affecting your daily life—such as prolonged sadness, lack of appetite, or difficulty sleeping. If you feel overwhelmed, consider speaking with a counselor or therapist who can provide support.

Remember, we’re here to help. If you want to discuss your cat’s final moments or need more support, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Booking a video consult with us can provide the opportunity to talk through your feelings and receive guidance tailored to your experience.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

A great fast efficient service with a qualified vet who was lovely and helpful. Thank you Samantha. I was able to sort my dog at 6pm on a Sunday night for $49 - amazing. Highly recommend.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
