I'm feeling really torn and could use some advice. I've recently started debating whether to find a new home for my cat, Mittens. She’s an adorable, fluffy gray bundle of love, but here’s the tricky part: she’s been in a few scrappy situations at the local park with other cats. Nothing too serious, but there have been some bite marks involved. Now, I want to be completely honest with any potential new owners, but I’m worried this might scare people off. Mittens is an absolute sweetheart at home, super cuddly and playful, but she just has a little bit of sass when it comes to other animals. Is it best to mention these past incidents right away or wait until they ask about her behavior? I really want to do what’s best for her while also giving full disclosure, so any thoughts or similar experiences would be hugely appreciated. Thanks a ton! ❤️
Hi there! Thanks for reaching out with your question. It's completely appropriate—and important—to disclose any bite encounters your cat has had, especially when discussing their health with a veterinarian or any boarding facility. Bite incidents can carry the risk of infection or transmission of diseases, like feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) or feline leukemia virus (FeLV), which are spread through deep bite wounds.
If your cat has recently been in a scuffle and has any wounds, it’s a good idea to gently clean the area with warm water and monitor for signs of infection, such as swelling, redness, or a foul odor. Keep an eye out for behavioral changes as well—like lethargy or loss of appetite—as these can be signs of a deeper issue needing immediate attention.
If your cat's wound seems to be healing well and they’re acting normally, that's a great sign. However, don't hesitate to reach out if you're worried or notice any of the concerning symptoms I mentioned. It’s always better to be safe and get a professional’s opinion.
