I don’t know what is happening and I'm kinda freaking out. I recently bought this beautiful solid cedar wood scratching post for my cat, Luna, because I heard it’s super durable. But now I'm worried about whether it's safe for her. After bringing it home, Luna immediately went to town scratching it, which I thought was great at first, but then I noticed she’s licking the wood too. I’m not sure if it’s just curiosity or if there’s something more to it. I started googling and came across some conflicting info on whether cedar wood can be toxic to cats. Now I'm paranoid about it causing any harm. Has anyone else given their kitty a cedar scratching post before? What should I look out for, and do I need to replace it with something else? Any advice or insight would really help calm my nerves. Thanks in advance!
Thanks for your question! Cedar wood can be a bit of a grey area when it comes to pets. While cedar is often used in pet bedding and enclosures, it's important to be cautious. Cedarwood contains aromatic oils that can potentially cause irritation to some cats, especially if they're prone to respiratory issues or tend to chew on their toys or furniture.
If your cat has been using a cedar scratching post, keep an eye on them for signs of irritation, such as sneezing, coughing, or watery eyes. These could indicate that your cat is sensitive to the oils in the wood. Additionally, if your cat is chewing on the post, try to discourage this behavior, as ingesting splinters might lead to digestive troubles.
For at-home care, ensure your cat has access to fresh water to soothe any potential irritation, and consider rotating in alternative scratching materials like sisal or cardboard to see what they prefer.
If you notice persistent respiratory symptoms, changes in behavior, or digestive issues, it's best to consult with a veterinarian. These could signify a more serious issue that might need medical attention.
