Question:

I left compounded Meloxicam + Cosequin out overnight, can I still use it?

I’m really hoping to get some advice here because I'm freaking out a bit. Last night, I accidentally left my dog's compounded Meloxicam + Cosequin out on the kitchen counter instead of putting it back in the fridge. I know it's super important for his arthritis, and it’s pretty expensive to replace. The bottle says it needs to be refrigerated, and now I’m worried I might’ve ruined it or that it could harm him. He’s an older dog and really depends on this medication to stay comfortable. Has anyone made a similar mistake or know if it’s still safe to use after being out for about 12 hours? I don’t want to give him something that might be less effective or worse, harmful. Would love some advice on what to do next! Thanks a ton in advance.

Answer:

Hi there!

It’s easy to forget things out overnight, so you're not alone! When it comes to medications like compounded Meloxicam with Cosequin, their stability can be affected by exposure to temperature changes, light, and humidity. Leaving it out could alter its potency or safety.

Meloxicam is a pain reliever often used for inflammatory conditions, while Cosequin supports joint health. If their effectiveness is compromised, your pet might not get the relief or benefits intended. Unfortunately, it’s generally safest not to use medications that haven’t been stored as recommended.

If you’ve left the medication out and it’s liquid, look for changes in color, texture, or smell—these can be signs it’s no longer good to use. Even if everything seems fine, using it could still pose a risk since certain changes aren't always visible.

While it might be disappointing to discard it, it’s safer for your pet. In the meantime, you can ensure your pet has a comfortable, stress-free environment. If they're in discomfort, providing a soft place to rest or gentle massages can be soothing.

Keep a close eye on any limping, changes in activity, appetite, or behavior, as these might signal the need for immediate veterinary care.

I’d recommend setting up a video consult with Dial A Vet to discuss a new prescription or explore other options that fit your pet's needs.

Take care!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
