I’m really hoping to get some advice or reassurance. My sweet old kitty, Whiskers, who's been my companion for the past 16 years, has suddenly started showing some worrying signs. Up until a couple days ago, he was eating just fine, but now he’s barely touching his food. I’ve noticed him struggling a bit when he does try to eat, like he’s uncomfortable or something. And now he's drinking a lot more than usual, which isn’t normal for him. There are no obvious symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea, so I’m at a bit of a loss here. He’s been healthy for his age, so this change has got me really stressed out. I’ve got an appointment with the vet tomorrow, but I’m just sitting here anxious and overthinking every possibility. Has anyone else experienced this with their fur baby? Any tips on how to make him more comfortable in the meantime would be really appreciated. Thanks!
Hi there! I’m sorry to hear your elderly kitty is having difficulties with eating and drinking. Let’s try to help your feline friend feel better.
When cats stop eating or drinking, especially older ones, it can be due to several reasons. Dental issues are quite common. Pain from a sore tooth or gum could make eating uncomfortable. Kidney problems or other organ issues are more common in older cats, and they often lead to changes in appetite. It could also be that your cat is feeling under the weather or has developed a new sensitivity to food or water for some reason.
At home, you can try offering your kitty some wet food or warming up their food slightly to make it more enticing. Make sure fresh water is always available and maybe try a cat fountain if they enjoy running water—it could encourage more drinking.
Watch for signs that things might be more serious, like lethargy, vomiting, weight loss, or any changes in urination patterns. If you notice any of these, it’s important to consult a vet promptly.
