Question:

Dog has had diarrhea on and off for months now

I'm really hoping for some advice here because I'm starting to feel pretty helpless. My 4-year-old golden retriever, Max, has been dealing with bouts of diarrhea for the past few months, and I can’t seem to find a solution. We’ve been to the vet multiple times, and they’ve run a ton of tests but still can't figure out what's actually causing it. I've tried changing his diet to a limited ingredient diet to see if it was an allergy issue, and we've even tested out a few different probiotics, but nothing seems to stick. His episodes are pretty random but happen at least once a week, and it's really taking a toll on both of us. He’s also lost a bit of weight and seems less energetic lately, which is heartbreaking because he used to be so lively and playful. I’m doing my best to keep him hydrated and comfortable, but I feel like I’m failing him as a pet owner. Does anyone have any experience with this, or can recommend something I haven't tried yet? I'm at my wits' end and just want Max to feel better. Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:

Hello there! I imagine you must be quite concerned about your dog's ongoing diarrhea, and I'm here to help shed some light on what's going on and how you might manage it at home.

Diarrhea in dogs can result from various causes, like dietary changes, food intolerances, infections, parasites, or even stress. If it's been happening on and off for months, it might be due to a chronic issue, such as an allergy to a specific food ingredient or an underlying digestive condition.

In the short term, you can try to soothe your dog's tummy by switching to a bland diet—think plain boiled chicken and rice—for a few days. Also, make sure your dog stays hydrated, as diarrhea can lead to dehydration.

However, watch for signs that the situation could be serious, such as vomiting, lethargy, blood in the stool, or a fever. If you notice any of these, it's important to seek veterinary care promptly.

I'd recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. We can delve deeper into your dog's history and symptoms, and this will help us tailor a care plan just for your furry friend. Looking forward to helping you and your pup!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
