Question:

do you think my dog will survive?

I'm really freaking out right now and could use any advice. My sweet Golden Retriever, Max, is just lying there and refusing to eat or drink anything. It's so unlike him because he’s usually so energetic and playful. I noticed he started losing interest in his toys a couple of days ago, but I thought maybe he was just having an off day. But today, he won't even get up for his favorite snacks, and he's been vomitting occasionally. I've called my vet, but they can't see him until tomorrow morning, and I'm really worried. He’s about eight years old, and other than some minor arthritis, he's been in great health. I’m terrified that something serious might be going on and I feel so helpless. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? What can I do to help him until we can get to the vet? Any advice or insights would mean the world to me right now.

Answer:

Thank you for reaching out with your concern, and I’m here to help. I understand it can be incredibly stressful when you’re worried about your furry friend. The good news is that many health issues in dogs can be treated successfully, but it’s crucial to identify the underlying cause of any symptoms you’ve noticed.

Could you tell me more about what’s happening with your dog? Common signs of a serious issue can include vomiting, diarrhea, limping, loss of appetite, excessive thirst, or changes in behavior. Each of these could have various causes, ranging from mild issues like dietary indiscretion or minor injuries to more severe conditions such as infections or organ dysfunction.

At home, make sure your dog is comfortable, has plenty of fresh water, and is resting in a quiet space. However, if your dog is exhibiting any severe or worsening symptoms, it’s essential to seek veterinary care promptly. Watch for signs like ongoing vomiting, difficulty breathing, unresponsiveness, or severe pain, as these require immediate attention.

To get a more accurate assessment and advice tailored to your dog’s situation, I encourage you to book a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. This will allow us to discuss in detail and determine the best next steps for your beloved pet.

  Book A Vet Consultation
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

A great fast efficient service with a qualified vet who was lovely and helpful. Thank you Samantha. I was able to sort my dog at 6pm on a Sunday night for $49 - amazing. Highly recommend.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
