I'm really hoping to get some advice because I'm at my wit's end here. I have a three-year-old rescue dog, Max, who I love to bits, but we're facing some serious behavioral issues that I just can't seem to get a handle on. Max gets really aggressive, especially around other dogs and it’s getting worse—he's even started snapping at people, which terrifies me. I've tried positive reinforcement training and taken him to obedience classes, but nothing is sticking. I'm starting to feel like I've let him down. I've heard about veterinary behaviorists, but I'm not sure what they do or if that's the right route for us. Does anyone have experience with this? Is it worth it, or should I keep trying other training methods? Any advice would be deeply appreciated because I just want Max to be happy and comfortable. Thanks in advance, guys.
Hi there! It's great that you're taking the time to understand your pet's behavior better. Whether you need a vet behaviorist depends on what you're dealing with. Some behaviors can be managed with tips at home, while others might need a professional touch.
If your pet is showing signs of aggression, anxiety, compulsive behaviors, or if there's a sudden change in behavior, it could signal an underlying issue. Sometimes these behaviors stem from medical conditions like pain, neurological problems, or hormonal imbalances. A vet would usually want to rule these out first.
For mild issues, try observing what triggers the behavior and if there are ways to avoid or modify those situations. Consistent routines, positive reinforcement, and plenty of exercise can sometimes help.
However, if your pet seems distressed, if you notice any harm to themselves or others, or if the behavior interferes with daily life, it might be time to consult a vet behaviorist. These professionals are specially trained to address complex behavioral issues and can offer more tailored advice.
Consider setting up a video consult with us at Dial A Vet. It’s a convenient way to start getting the insights you need to help your furry friend feel better.
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely.
For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our
