I'm really hoping someone can help me out here. Yesterday, I was faced with the heart-wrenching decision to possibly put my beloved cat, Marley, to sleep due to some serious issues she's been having. However, after consulting with the vet, we decided to give her a bit more time with a heavy sedation to ease her pain while we assessed the situation. It's been over 24 hours now, and she still hasn't woken up from the sedated state. I'm freaking out and seriously worried about her because she normally bounces back pretty quickly from these things. Has anyone else experienced this with their pet? Should I be doing something specific to help her come around? I'm just sitting here, feeling helpless, and would really appreciate any advice or similar experiences anyone might be willing to share. Thank you so much in advance.
Hi there, I'm really sorry to hear your cat is going through this. It must be a worrying time for you both. Let’s see if we can untangle what's happening.
When a cat doesn't wake up from sedation, it may be due to several reasons. It could simply be that your kitty is taking a bit longer than usual to process the sedative. Cats metabolize medications differently, and some take longer to wake up, especially if they’re older or have underlying health issues like liver or kidney problems.
It's important to make sure your cat is in a safe and comfortable environment while they're sedated. Keep them warm with a blanket and gently monitor their breathing. Make sure they're on their side to prevent choking in case they vomit. Avoid giving them food or water until they're fully awake and able to swallow properly.
Be on the lookout for any signs of distress, such as labored breathing, a drop in temperature, or gums that are very pale or blue — these could signal that immediate veterinary attention is needed. I strongly recommend getting in touch with the vet who performed the procedure to discuss your concerns.
If you’re still feeling anxious, I’d suggest booking a video consult with Dial A Vet to get personalized advice and reassurance. Your peace of mind is important, and we're here to help.
