Question:

Cat sick w/ fever, no appetite/thirst

I'm really worried about my cat, Luna, and could use some advice or reassurance. She's always been such a lively and playful kitty, but the past couple of days have been really tough. She’s developed a fever and seems so lethargic, which is so unlike her. What’s freaking me out the most is that she has absolutely no interest in eating or even drinking water. Normally she’s all over her food as soon as I put it down, but now she just sniffs it and walks away. I’m scared because I know how important it is for cats to stay hydrated and I can't get her to drink anything. I’ve tried all her favorite treats and even some new ones, thinking it might entice her appetite, but nothing’s working. I haven’t been able to get a vet appointment for another couple of days and I’m just beside myself with worry because I don’t want to wait that long if it’s serious. Has anyone gone through something similar with their cat? What can I do in the meantime to help her? I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences you all could share. Thanks!

Answer:

Hello! I’m sorry to hear your kitty isn't feeling well. When a cat has a fever, it usually indicates that their body is fighting an infection or another health issue. The lack of appetite and thirst can sometimes be a result of this underlying illness.

Cats can develop fevers for several reasons, including viral or bacterial infections, such as an upper respiratory infection, or inflammations like pancreatitis. Stress, toxins, and even conditions like hyperthyroidism can also play a role.

At home, make sure your cat is resting in a quiet, comfortable area. Encourage fluid intake by offering fresh water often, or try giving them a bit of unsalted chicken broth. If they're not interested in their regular food, warming it slightly might make it more appealing.

Keep an eye out for other serious symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, or if they are extremely lethargic. These could be signs that their condition is worsening.

Because fever and a lack of appetite can be concerning, it's important to address these symptoms promptly. I recommend scheduling a video consultation with one of our veterinarians here at Dial A Vet. They'll help you determine the best course of action for your furry friend. Take care!

The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
