cat flu - should i be worried?

everyone! I’m feeling pretty worried right now and am hoping for some advice. My little furball, Whiskers, has been sneezing more than usual and seems a bit off. He’s been sleeping a lot and isn’t as enthusiastic about his food or playtime. I noticed his eyes are kinda watery, and I read somewhere that it might be cat flu. Has anyone else gone through this with their cats? I’m trying not to panic, but it’s so hard not to worry when he just looks so miserable. I’ll probably take him to the vet soon, but if anyone has tips on relief for him in the meantime, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you from a nervous cat parent!

Hi there! It sounds like you’re concerned about your cat possibly having the flu, and I’m here to help. Cat flu is a lot like a cold or flu in humans and can be caused by several factors, mainly viruses like the feline herpesvirus or calicivirus. You might notice symptoms like sneezing, a runny nose, watery eyes, or a decrease in appetite.



While many cases are mild and can be managed at home, it’s important to keep a close eye on your furry friend. Make sure they’re staying hydrated—try offering fresh water frequently, and you can even tempt them with a little low-sodium chicken broth. Using a humidifier may also help if they’re congested.



However, if you notice your cat has difficulty breathing, refuses to eat or drink, becomes lethargic, or if the symptoms persist for more than a few days, it's a sign that you should seek veterinary care. Kittens, elderly cats, and those with other health conditions are at higher risk for complications.
