I don't know what to do. I'm feeling completely overwhelmed right now. My sweet cat Oliver went in for a routine neutering a couple of weeks ago, but things didn’t go as planned at all. The vet assured me it was a simple procedure, but soon after, I noticed he was acting strangely and seemed to be in a lot of pain. After taking him back in, it turns out they didn’t do the surgery correctly and now he's going to need another procedure to fix it. I’m heartbroken and stressed, and on top of everything, the clinic is asking me to cover the costs of the second surgery. Is this normal? Does anyone have any experience with this? I feel like we’re both paying the price for their mistake, and I'm really worried about both Oliver's health and the financial aspect. Any advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks for reaching out with your question. I’m really sorry to hear about the issues following your pet’s neuter surgery; that must be frustrating and worrying for you.
Post-surgery complications can occur for several reasons, including infection, incomplete removal of reproductive tissue, or reaction to sutures. If the initial surgery wasn’t done correctly, another procedure might indeed be necessary to ensure your pet's health and comfort. In terms of payment, this situation can vary widely depending on the veterinary clinic’s policies, so it would be best to discuss it directly with them.
At home, you can help your pet by ensuring their surgical site is clean and dry. Keep your pet from licking the area by using a cone or an alternative, and watch for any swelling, redness, or unusual discharge. Eating habits, lethargy, or vomiting can also be signs to monitor. If you notice these symptoms, it would be wise to seek medical attention promptly, as they could indicate infection or another complication.
