Answer
Pale gums and lethargy in a young Basenji are red flags for pyruvate kinase deficiency (PKD). Symptoms typically appear between 4 months and 2 years. The condition destroys red blood cells, causing chronic anemia. Signs include pale gums, fatigue, exercise intolerance, rapid breathing, and sometimes a yellowing of the whites of the eyes (jaundice). It's caused by a PKLR gene mutation. Blood work showing anemia with reticulocytosis (immature red blood cells) raises suspicion, and a DNA test confirms it. Please see a vet promptly. Our vets can help you interpret blood results and plan next steps.
