Answer
Craniomandibular Osteopathy has been identified in breeds including Cairn Terriers, Scottish Terriers, and West Highland White Terriers. The condition is dominant with incomplete penetrance, involving a mutation in the SLC37A2 gene. DNA testing for the SLC37A2 gene is available and gives a definitive answer. A single copy can cause disease, though not all carriers develop symptoms. Affected dogs should generally not be bred. Responsible breeders test both parents before any mating. Our vets can discuss breed-specific screening and help you understand what test results mean.
