Would slightly expired Bravecto still be safe to give my dogs?

Something weird just happened, and I’m not sure what to do. I found an old pack of Bravecto in the back of my cupboard while cleaning out the kitchen this morning. It’s only a month past the expiration date, and I've always used it with no problems before, but now I’m second-guessing myself. My two pups, Luna and Max, really need their flea treatment, but I'm worried about the slight expiry. Are they going to get sick if I give it to them? I honestly don’t want to risk it without knowing more. Has anyone else dealt with this before? Would love any insights or reassurance!

Answer

Appreciate the question — let's unpack this. When it comes to giving any medication, including Bravecto, it's important to err on the side of caution. Bravecto is a popular flea and tick preventative for dogs that works systemically. While the expiration date is determined to guarantee the effectiveness and safety of the product, slightly expired medication might lose its potency or, in some rare cases, could have altered chemical properties.

If Bravecto is just slightly past the expiration date, it’s unlikely to cause harm, but it might not work as effectively, which means your pups could be at risk for flea or tick infestations. It's best to weigh the potential risks against benefits here. If your dogs are in an area with high flea and tick activity, you might want to ensure they're fully protected.

At home, you can monitor your dogs closely for any sign of flea or tick activity and ensure your home and yard are also treated to prevent infestations. Signs of concern from pests include excessive scratching, biting at skin, or visible fleas.
