I’m feeling really overwhelmed right now and could use some advice. My dog, Max, just finished his heartworm treatment, and while I’m relieved that part is over, I can't help but be worried about his future. He's been more sluggish than usual, and I’m not sure if it’s from the medication or something else. Before all this, Max was my lively little shadow, always ready for a walk or a game of fetch at any moment. Recently though, even on short walks, he seems to tire out quickly and isn’t interested in his toys. Has anyone else gone through this with their pup? Does energy come back after a certain period, or do I need to adjust my expectations of what normal looks like for him now? I miss his old self and just want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to help his recovery. Any tips or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your question. It's understandable to be concerned about your dog's well-being after a heartworm infection. The good news is that many dogs can have a great quality of life post-heartworm treatment, but there are a few things to be aware of.
Heartworms can cause damage to your dog's heart, lungs, and blood vessels. The extent of recovery largely depends on how severe the infection was and how early it was treated. Some dogs may return to their old selves, while others might experience lasting effects, such as a persistent cough or reduced exercise tolerance.
At home, it's important to keep your dog calm and avoid strenuous activity, as their heart and lungs need time to heal. Make sure they have a comfortable resting area and offer a balanced diet to support recovery.
Watch closely for any signs of complications, such as coughing, difficulty breathing, lethargy, or any changes in appetite, as these could indicate ongoing issues.
For peace of mind and a comprehensive assessment of your dog's recovery, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our veterinarians through Dial A Vet. They can provide tailored advice and help ensure your furry friend is on the right path to health.
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely.
For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional.
