I'm really confused and could use some advice. My cat Luna is acting super weird, and I’ve never seen her like this before. It's been going on since last night, kind of out of the blue. She's started rolling around on the floor, meowing more loudly than usual, and doing this weird thing where she sticks her butt in the air. She’s also rubbing against everything in sight, and I’m honestly not sure what's happening. Is this normal cat behavior? Could she be in heat? She’s never done this before, and I'm freaking out a little because I have no idea if there’s something I should be doing or if it's just a phase. Any advice would be really appreciated!
Thanks for reaching out! It's a really good question, and I can understand why you might be curious or even concerned about this behavior. Female cats in heat, also known as being in estrus, can indeed exhibit behaviors that might look like they're simulating mating. This is part of their natural reproductive cycle and can include actions like rolling on the floor, vocalizing loudly, becoming more affectionate or even assuming a mating posture when you pet them.
These behaviors are driven by hormonal changes and are perfectly normal. However, if your cat seems excessively distressed or if her behavior seems unusually intense, there are a few things you can try to help her calm down. Provide plenty of playtime to expend her energy, and consider using a pheromone spray or diffuser to help soothe her environment.
Keep an eye out for signs that might indicate she's overly stressed or in pain, such as excessive crying, aggressive behaviors, or loss of appetite. If any of these symptoms appear, it could be a sign of a more serious issue, and reaching out for professional advice would be the best step.
If you're unsure or if her behavior seems concerning, I recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. They can help assess your cat's behavior and provide tailored advice.
