I'm really hoping someone here can help me out because I'm feeling pretty lost and worried right now. My sweet cat, Luna, has started making these absolutely terrifying howling noises out of the blue. I've never heard anything like it before; it’s like she’s in pain or distressed, and it’s breaking my heart. She’s usually pretty quiet aside from the usual meows, so this is really out of character for her. It typically happens late at night, and it’s so loud that it wakes me up. I checked to see if anything physical might be bothering her—like maybe she hurt herself or something—but she seems fine otherwise. Her eating and litter box habits haven’t changed either. I managed to record a quick clip of her doing it and attached it here. Seriously, if anyone’s heard anything like this before or has any suggestions on what to do, I’d be super grateful. I just want to make sure my little furball is happy and healthy. Thanks in advance!
Hello there! I'm sorry to hear that your cat is making those unsettling howling noises. Let’s try to get to the bottom of it together.
Cats can howl for various reasons. One common cause is that they’re in pain. This can be due to arthritis, dental issues, or an injury. Another possibility is that they’re feeling anxious or stressed, perhaps due to changes at home or a new pet in the area. Cats also howl when they're disoriented, which might happen if they're losing their vision or hearing with age. Lastly, unspayed or unneutered cats may howl when they’re in heat or searching for a mate.
First, try to offer some comfort with a cozy and quiet space. Observe if your cat exhibits any other symptoms like limping, drooling, or changes in eating and drinking habits.
If you notice these warning signs, such as worsening howling, lethargy, severe changes in behavior, or if they're unable to use the litter box, it’s essential to seek veterinary care promptly.
