Why is my dogs penis dripping blood, and he has lost his appetite and only will eat treats

I'm really worried about my dog and hoping someone here can offer some advice. Over the past couple of days, I've noticed that my dog's penis has been dripping blood occasionally, which definitely isn’t normal. I tried to brush it off at first, thinking maybe he just had a minor injury that would heal on its own, but now he's barely eating his regular food and will only nibble on treats. This is so unlike him, as he usually has a great appetite. I’ve checked him over for any obvious signs of injury, but I can't see anything. Has anyone experienced something similar with their dog? I'm really starting to panic, and of course, it's the weekend so our regular vet is closed. Should I be rushing to an emergency clinic, or could this wait until Monday? Any advice or experiences are really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Answer

Hello! I'm sorry to hear your dog is experiencing these issues, but I'm glad you reached out. Blood from your dog's penis can be concerning and may result from various causes. A urinary tract infection (UTI) is one possibility, which can cause irritation and bleeding. Another potential cause includes trauma or injury to the genital area, or even kidney or bladder stones. In some cases, it might be related to prostate or other underlying systemic issues, especially if your dog is not neutered.

The loss of appetite and preference for treats could be associated with discomfort or pain. Dogs often go for what feels easiest or most appealing if they're not feeling well.

To help your dog at home, ensure he's drinking enough water, as dehydration can exacerbate urinary issues. Encourage him to rest, and monitor his behavior closely. Look out for signs such as straining to urinate, frequent attempts to urinate, signs of pain, lethargy, or continued appetite loss.

If you notice any of these signs or if the bleeding continues, it's crucial to consult a vet promptly to determine the specific cause and get appropriate treatment. Please consider booking a video consult with our team at Dial A Vet to discuss your dog's symptoms in more detail and get personalized guidance.
