Question:

Why does my dog walk in a C shape after grooming?

I'm really hoping you all can help me out because I'm kind of freaking out here. I just got back from the groomer with my dog, Max, and I've noticed he's doing something really strange. After his grooming session, he started walking in this weird C shape. It's like his body curves to one side, and I'm not sure if it's because he’s uncomfortable or if something happened during grooming? Max is usually super energetic and playful, but right now, he's acting all weird and he's not responding to my calls like he usually does. I’m worried something might have gone wrong, but I'm not sure if I’m overreacting. Has anyone else experienced this with their pup after a grooming session? I’d really appreciate any advice or insight you might have. Thanks!

Answer:

Hello!

It sounds like your dog is doing something interesting after grooming—walking in a C shape. This behavior can sometimes be caused by discomfort or irritation. After a groom, dogs might feel a bit different due to the new sensation of shorter fur or skin being touched differently. Sometimes the grooming process can lead to mild skin irritation, especially if their skin is sensitive or if there was any unforeseen nick from clippers.

Another reason could be a reaction to the position they were in while being groomed, leading to temporary stiffness or muscle tension. It’s a bit like when we get out of an awkward position and feel stiff afterward.

At home, you can gently massage your dog’s back and sides to help ease any minor tension. Ensure no visible signs of irritation, such as redness or bumps on their skin. A warm bath with a gentle, pet-friendly shampoo might soothe their skin.

Keep an eye on their behavior over the next couple of days. If your dog continues to walk unusually, shows signs of pain (like yelping or reluctance to move), or if their skin looks irritated, these could be signs of something that might need more attention.

In any case, if you're concerned, it’s worthwhile to book a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet to get personalized advice and peace of mind. Take care!

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
