Question:

Why does my cat have a growing bald spot on the head

I'm really stressed out and could use some advice. I've noticed over the last week or so that my sweet cat, Whiskers, has developed a bald spot on the top of her head, and it seems to be getting bigger. At first, I thought maybe she had just rubbed against something, but it's clearly more than that now. She's an indoor cat, so I'm puzzled about what might have caused it. She doesn't seem to be in any discomfort or pain, and her behavior hasn't changed at all. She’s still her usual playful self, thank goodness! There’s been no change in her diet or environment either, so I'm at a loss here. I'm starting to worry if it's something like a skin condition or worse, some kind of parasite. I haven’t had a chance to take her to the vet yet (planning to go soon), but I was hoping maybe someone else has experienced the same thing. Any ideas on what could be happening or suggestions on how to help her until I get to the vet would be hugely appreciated!

Answer:

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about your cat's bald spot. Let's see if we can figure out what's going on and get your furry friend back to normal.

Bald spots in cats can be caused by several things. One common reason is allergies, either to food or something in their environment, which can cause itchiness and hair loss. Another possibility is a parasitic infection, such as fleas or mites. Your kitty might also be going through stress, leading to over-grooming and, consequently, hair loss.

At home, try keeping your cat’s environment calm and stress-free. Regularly check for fleas, and consider a diet trial if you suspect a food allergy may be at play. Gently clean the area with warm water to avoid infection, but be sure not to use any harsh chemicals or substances.

Watch out for signs like redness, swelling, pus, or if your cat seems to be in discomfort. These could indicate an infection or more serious issue that needs immediate attention.

It'd be a good idea to have a vet take a closer look to determine the exact cause and right course of action. Feel free to book a video consult with a vet on Dial A Vet so we can assess your cat's condition more comprehensively. We’re here to help!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
