Question:

Why do some people think raw food diets are healthier for pets?

so I’m feeling really torn and could use some advice. I’ve got this amazing three-year-old Labrador named Max, who is seriously the light of my life. Lately, I’ve been reading up on raw food diets for pets and hearing a lot of mixed things from different people. Some of my friends swear by it and say their dogs are so much healthier and more energetic, but then I’ve read some stuff that’s totally the opposite. I’m really worried about making such a big change to Max’s diet without being sure it’s the right choice. Is a raw food diet actually better for dogs? How do I even start if I decide to go down that route? It feels like such a huge decision, and I want to do what’s best for Max. Any advice or personal experiences would be super appreciated, thanks!

Answer:

Hi there! That's a great question, and it's something many pet owners wonder about. People who advocate for raw food diets often believe that these diets are more natural and similar to what animals would eat in the wild. They might suggest that raw diets can lead to shinier coats, healthier skin, cleaner teeth, increased energy, and smaller stools due to better digestion.

However, it's important to consider the potential risks. Raw diets can sometimes lack essential nutrients if not carefully balanced, which might lead to deficiencies or health issues. There's also a risk of harmful bacteria like Salmonella or E. coli being present in raw meats, which can affect both pets and humans.

If you're thinking about changing your pet's diet, it's crucial to ensure it's nutritionally complete and safe. You could consider a gradual transition to see how your pet responds. Watch for signs like diarrhea, vomiting, or lethargy, as these might indicate problems with the new diet.

If you're curious about whether a raw diet could be right for your pet, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. We can discuss your pet's specific needs and help you weigh the pros and cons.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
