Question:

Personal pet question...attraction/licking adhesive/ adhesive residue

I could really use some advice. I'm feeling a bit anxious and confused about a behavior my dog, Max, has recently picked up. Lately, I've noticed he has this weird obsession with licking anything sticky or adhesive, like tape or labels. For example, whenever I bring home a package and leave it on the floor, Max tries to lick the tape off. I even caught him almost tearing a Band-Aid off my finger when I wasn't looking! I'm really worried because I know some adhesives can be toxic if ingested, and I don't want him getting sick. Has anyone else experienced this with their pet? Do you think it could be a dietary thing, or maybe he's missing some kind of nutrient? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, especially if you've found a way to redirect this behavior or know why it might be happening. Thanks so much in advance!

Answer:

Hello! It sounds like your pet has taken a keen interest in adhesive residues, which is quite common. Pets, especially dogs and cats, can be attracted to the smell or texture of adhesives found on things like bandages or tape. Sometimes, licking can be their way of exploring something unusual or interesting.

One potential cause for this behavior could be the appealing taste or smell of the adhesive itself. Some adhesives might contain ingredients that pets find intriguing or tasty, especially if they've been in contact with food or scents previously.

While occasional licking might not be harmful, it's essential to be cautious. Ingesting adhesives could lead to an upset stomach or, in rare cases, a blockage, especially if they swallow a large piece. If your pet shows signs of vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or any unusual change in behavior, it would be wise to seek veterinary attention.

For safe at-home care, try to keep adhesive products out of reach and use pet-safe alternatives when possible. Distraction techniques with toys or treats can also help redirect their focus onto something safer.

If this behavior persists or you notice any concerning symptoms, it would be a good idea to get personalized advice. Consider booking a video consult with Dial A Vet, where we can discuss your pet’s specific situation in more detail.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
