Thanks for reaching out! Dogs can be quite protective over their food due to their instinctual behaviors. In the wild, resources like food are scarce, and animals often need to compete for them. This can translate into dogs feeling the need to guard their food more than water, which is often more readily available in their environment.
Several factors can influence this behavior. Your dog's past experiences, their position in the pack, or even just their individual temperament can play a role. If they’ve had to compete for food before, they might feel more inclined to guard it now, even if they're in a safe and loving home.
At home, try feeding them in separate areas to reduce competition and stress. Ensuring each dog has their own bowl and feeding them meals at the same time can help minimize tension. It's also important to avoid taking food away from them abruptly to prevent adding to their anxiety.
Watch for signs of aggression, such as growling or snapping, as these could indicate stress or fear. If the aggression escalates or they hurt each other, consult with a professional trainer or vet.

Why do dogs fight over food, but not water?
Help, what do I do? I’ve got two dogs, Max and Bella, and they’ve always been buddies, but lately whenever I fill their food bowls, it’s like an all-out war. We’re talking growling, snapping, the whole nine yards. It’s so weird because they don’t act like this with their water bowls at all. I feed them at the same time every night around 6 pm, and it’s becoming a major anxiety point for me because they used to eat side by side without a hitch. I’ve tried separating their bowls a bit, but it doesn’t seem to help much. I’m just so confused and worried that this is going to mess up their friendship or cause a fight that I won’t be able to break up. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice would be seriously appreciated.
