Question:

Why did my puppy pass?

I’m devastated and really need some advice or at least some understanding. My sweet little pup, Max, was only four months old when he suddenly passed away yesterday, and I’m just at a loss. He was such a bundle of energy one day, bounding around the house, and then the next day he seemed lethargic and wasn’t interested in food or playing. I thought maybe he just had an off day, but within a few hours, he started vomiting and had diarrhea. We rushed him to the vet, but even though they tried everything, he didn’t make it. I can’t stop thinking about what I might have missed or done wrong. Max was up to date on his shots and we hadn't changed his food or anything. I just don’t understand how this could happen so fast. Has anyone else experienced something like this? Any insight or shared experiences would be really appreciated right now.

Answer:

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your puppy. Losing a pet is incredibly difficult, and my heart goes out to you. Puppies, like all young animals, are delicate and can be affected by several things. Common causes of sudden illness or passing in puppies include congenital defects, infections like parvovirus, ingestion of toxic substances, or severe internal parasites. It’s also possible for puppies to suffer from undiagnosed heart issues or other systemic problems.

At-home, it's crucial to puppy-proof your environment by keeping harmful substances out of reach and ensuring a safe space for your pet to explore. Regular check-ups with a vet can help catch potential issues early, but sometimes, despite our best efforts, underlying conditions go unnoticed until it's too late.

If you have other pets, watch for signs of illness such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or loss of appetite. These can be indicators of something that might have affected your puppy and could risk your other animals.

For specific insights into what happened, you might consider a post-mortem exam with your vet. Meanwhile, if you're ever worried or need extra guidance, I encourage you to book a video consult with us at Dial A Vet. Our team is here to support you during this challenging time.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

A great fast efficient service with a qualified vet who was lovely and helpful. Thank you Samantha. I was able to sort my dog at 6pm on a Sunday night for $49 - amazing. Highly recommend.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
