Whats wrong with my dogs paw?

Something weird just happened with Bella, and I’m a bit worried. We were out for our usual evening walk around the neighborhood when I noticed she started limping out of nowhere. It's like she can’t put any weight on her right front paw, and it's been going on for almost an hour now. I've tried checking her paw for anything stuck or swollen, but she keeps pulling away and whimpering, which is breaking my heart. I don’t know if I should wait it out or if this needs urgent attention. Has anyone experienced something similar? She's usually such a trooper and seeing her like this is really freaking me out. Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out about your dog's paw—it's great that you're being proactive in checking on this. Paw problems can come from a variety of sources, so let’s talk through some of the possibilities.

Your dog might have stepped on something sharp or hot, leading to a cut or burn. Alternatively, there could be something stuck like a thorn or a piece of glass. Sometimes, allergies can cause your dog's paws to become itchy, red, and inflamed. Fungal or bacterial infections are other culprits that can make a paw uncomfortable and sore.

For at-home care, gently examine your dog’s paw for any visible foreign objects or injuries. If there’s a cut, you can clean it with warm, soapy water and apply pet-safe antiseptic. Ensure you’re using mild solutions to avoid irritation. Keeping the paw clean and dry, and preventing them from licking it too much, can also help.

Watch for signs of swelling, limping, pus, or if your dog seems to be in a lot of pain or is excessively licking the paw. If any of these occur, it might signal a more serious issue that needs prompt attention.
