Question:

What will happen if I abandon a kitten at the vet

I'm in a bit of a pickle and could really use some advice from fellow pet lovers. I recently took in a stray kitten that I found near my apartment. He's the sweetest little thing, but with my current situation—working two jobs and barely managing to pay rent—I just can't give him the care he deserves. I've heard some people say you can leave a kitten at the vet, but I really don't know what happens after that. Do they find homes for them, or do they end up in a shelter? I'm terrified of the idea that he'll end up in a cold, overcrowded shelter stall. I love this little guy already, and the thought of him being scared or abandoned breaks my heart. Has anyone been in a similar situation or have any insight on what the best course of action might be? I just want to make sure he has the shot at a great life that he deserves.

Answer:

Hello! I’m glad you reached out to discuss the concerns with your kitten. Finding yourself in a situation where you’re unable to care for your pet can be really tough. I want to reassure you that you are not alone, and there are resources and people ready to help.

Abandoning a kitten at a veterinary clinic isn’t recommended. Clinics aren’t equipped to house animals long-term, and abandoned animals can end up in shelters, which may be overwhelmed. However, if you find yourself in a position where you truly can’t keep your kitten, there are humane and better options available.

You might consider reaching out to nearby animal shelters or rescue organizations. They often have foster networks or adoption programs to find your kitten a loving home. You can also ask friends, family, or community groups if anyone is looking to adopt a kitten.

In the meantime, make sure your kitten has access to clean water, nutritious food suitable for kittens, and a safe, quiet place to rest. Keep an eye out for any signs of illness such as lethargy, diarrhea, or difficulty breathing, as these might require urgent attention.

I encourage you to book a video consult with Dial A Vet. We can discuss more personalized options, provide guidance, and support you and your kitten during this time. Remember, we're here to help!

  Book A Vet Consultation
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
