what is wrong with my dog ?

I'm really worried about my little guy and hoping someone might have some insights. Over the past couple of days, Max, my 4-year-old golden retriever, has been acting super strange. Normally, he’s this ball of energy, constantly trying to get me to play fetch with him. But lately, he seems so lethargic and isn’t even interested in his favorite tennis ball. He’s also been sleeping way more than usual and barely touched his food this morning, which is super unlike him. I’ve noticed that he’s been drinking more water, too, and when I took him for a walk yesterday, he just wasn’t his usual peppy self. I failed to mention earlier, but he’s up-to-date on all his shots. I know that changes in behavior can sometimes indicate health issues, but I’m not sure if this warrants a trip to the vet or if I'm just being a helicopter pet parent. Has anyone else experienced something similar with their dogs? What did you do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Answer

Hi there! I’m glad you’re reaching out for help. Dogs can’t tell us what’s wrong, so it's up to us to be detectives. There could be many reasons why your dog isn't feeling well. It may be something simple—like an upset stomach from a change in diet or a mild case of the sniffles. On the other hand, it could be more significant, like a lingering infection, allergies, or even a more serious internal issue.

At home, make sure your dog is comfortable and staying hydrated. Fresh water is important, and you might consider offering a bland diet, such as boiled chicken and rice, to see if that helps settle their stomach. Keep an eye on their behavior—look for signs like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or loss of appetite. These symptoms can give clues about what's going on.

If you notice that your dog is experiencing difficulty breathing, has persistent vomiting or diarrhea, seems unusually tired, or just isn’t acting like themselves, these can be signs of a more serious condition that needs immediate medical attention.

I highly recommend booking a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals. They can give you specific guidance tailored to your furry friend's needs and help determine if an in-person visit is necessary. Your dog is lucky to have such a caring owner like you!
