Question:

What is wrong with my cat?

I'm really worried about my cat, and I'm hoping someone might have some advice or insights. Luna, my usually playful and affectionate two-year-old tabby, has been acting really strange over the past few days. She's usually all over me, purring and seeking attention, but now she's withdrawn and hiding under the couch most of the time. She's also not eating as much as she usually does, and I've noticed she's drinking a lot more water than normal. I haven't changed her food or environment, so I'm really puzzled. There's also a slight limp in her walk, which makes me wonder if she hurt herself somehow. I can't shake this feeling that something might be seriously wrong. Has anyone experienced something similar with their fur babies or have any suggestions on what might be happening?

Answer:

Thanks for reaching out with your concern about your cat. Cats can sometimes be hard to read, and I’m here to help you figure out what might be going on.

First, consider any changes in your cat's behavior. Is your cat hiding more than usual, showing a lack of appetite, or acting lethargic? These could be signs of stress, pain, or an underlying health issue. Gastrointestinal issues, dental problems, or infections can all cause these symptoms. Also, have there been any recent changes in your home environment, like new pets or renovations, that could be affecting your cat?

For at-home care, ensure your cat has a quiet, comfortable place to rest and encourage hydration by providing fresh water. You might also try offering small amounts of their favorite foods to stimulate their appetite. Playtime and gentle petting can help alleviate stress, if they’re receptive.

Watch out for signs that might point to more serious concerns, such as persistent vomiting, diarrhea, drastic weight loss, or difficulty breathing. If you notice any of these signs, it's important to seek veterinary attention as soon as possible.

I’d recommend booking a video consultation with Dial A Vet. This will give us a chance to discuss your cat's symptoms in more detail and decide on the best course of action. Take care!

  Book A Vet Consultation
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

A great fast efficient service with a qualified vet who was lovely and helpful. Thank you Samantha. I was able to sort my dog at 6pm on a Sunday night for $49 - amazing. Highly recommend.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
