Hi there! I’m sorry to hear about your pet’s coughing spells—it must be quite concerning. Coughing in pets can have several causes, ranging from minor to more serious conditions.
For a start, your pet might be experiencing irritation from allergens like dust or pollen. Another possibility is an upper respiratory infection, such as kennel cough, which is quite common but usually manageable. Heart problems or a condition like tracheal collapse could also be a factor, especially if your pet is a small breed dog or is getting older.
At home, you can help by ensuring your pet is in a calm environment. Using a humidifier can keep the air moist and may ease their breathing. Additionally, try to reduce their exposure to irritants like cigarette smoke or strong cleaning products.
Keep a close eye on signs that suggest a more serious issue, like coughing that’s persistent, gets worse, or is accompanied by lethargy, difficulty breathing, or blue-tinted gums. If you notice these signs, it’s essential to seek veterinary care promptly.
For peace of mind and to get tailored advice, I’d recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. We'll be able to better assess your pet's situation and guide you through the next steps. Take care!
What could cause coughing fits like this?
I'm reaching out because I'm pretty worried about my dog, Max. He's a six-year-old Labrador who’s usually super energetic and happy, but over the past week, he's been having these intense coughing fits that come out of nowhere. It’s almost like a gagging cough, and sometimes he seems to have trouble catching his breath. I’ve tried to think of anything that might have changed, like his food or environment, but I'm drawing a blank. We're planning a vet visit soon, but I can't stop stressing, and the wait is driving me crazy. Has anyone experienced something similar with their pets? I’d really appreciate any advice or insights. Thanks so much!
