I'm reaching out because I'm kind of freaking out and hoping someone here might have some insights. I’ve got this adorable 4-month-old Golden Retriever puppy named Max, and he's literally my world. Lately, I've noticed these super tiny bugs crawling around in his fur. They're really hard to spot unless you look closely, but they're definitely there, especially around his belly and neck areas. I’ve been trying to check if they're fleas, but they don't seem to jump like fleas do, so I’m a bit puzzled. I keep Max clean and he’s mostly indoors, so I’m really worried about what's going on. He doesn't seem to be itching or overly uncomfortable, but I want to get ahead of this before it becomes a bigger issue. Has anyone else experienced something similar? Or do you have any advice on what these could be and how to get rid of them? Would hugely appreciate any help! Thanks in advance, everyone.
Hello there! It sounds like your curious pup has picked up a few hitchhikers. Tiny bugs on your puppy could be several things, but they’re often fleas or mites. Fleas are small, dark, and quick, while mites are sometimes harder to see and might cause dry, scaly patches on your puppy’s skin.
Fleas can make your furry friend itchy and uncomfortable, leading to red or irritated skin from all the scratching. For puppies, who have delicate skin, this can be especially irritating. For some at-home care, start by giving your puppy a gentle bath with warm water and a vet-approved mild soap to remove as many bugs as possible. Afterward, using a fine-toothed comb can help catch any stragglers.
Keep an eye on your puppy for signs like excessive itching, hair loss, or any black specs (which can be flea dirt) in their fur. If these symptoms persist, it’s important to find a safe, puppy-appropriate flea treatment.
Please reach out if the itching continues, if your puppy seems very uncomfortable, or if you notice any open sores or scabs. In these cases, booking a video consult with Dial A Vet could help us tailor a solution that’s just right for your pup. We’re here to help!
