Question:

What are these growths on my dog?

I’m really hoping someone can help because I’m feeling super anxious and scared right now. I have a sweet 6-year-old Labrador named Max who has always been a bundle of energy and love. Just recently, I noticed these weird little lumps forming around his neck and underbelly. They feel strange to touch, almost like soft marbles under his skin. I’m freaking out because I keep reading conflicting stuff online, and I really don’t want to jump to conclusions before talking to our vet. The soonest appointment we could get is in a couple of days, and I’m sitting here overthinking and really worried something might be seriously wrong. Has anyone else experienced this with their dog? What could these possibly be? I'm just trying to ease my mind a little until we see the vet. Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Hello there! It’s understandable to be concerned about growths on your dog, so let’s dive into what could be happening. There are several reasons why growths might appear, ranging from benign to more serious cases.

Commonly, growths can be things like skin tags, lipomas (which are just fatty tumors), or warts. These are usually harmless. Skin tags might feel soft and dangle a bit, while lipomas are generally smooth and found under the skin. Warts, on the other hand, have a rough texture.

In some cases, the growths might be cysts or abscesses, which could be due to infections or blocked glands. These might require a bit more attention, as they can sometimes become uncomfortable or painful for your dog.

It's crucial to keep an eye on these growths for any changes. If you notice they’re growing rapidly, changing color, or if your dog seems bothered by them (like excessive licking or scratching), it might be time for a closer look. Other signs to watch for include bleeding, oozing, or if the growth feels hard.

If you're uncertain, it's always best to consult with a veterinarian for peace of mind. You can easily book a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals, who can help assess your dog's condition and guide you on the next steps. Take care!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. A great fast efficient service with a qualified vet who was lovely and helpful. Thank you Samantha. I was able to sort my dog at 6pm on a Sunday night for $49 - amazing. Highly recommend.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
