Question:

what are some common cat/dog illnesses that can be prevented (or benefit greatly from early detection) but pet owners ignore?

I really need some advice. I’m starting to worry that I might be missing something important when it comes to my pets’ health. I’ve got a cat named Whiskers and a dog named Max, and they're pretty much my world. I've heard all kinds of horror stories about conditions that could have been handled better with early detection, but I don’t want to be one of those clueless pet owners who overlooks something preventable. Whiskers is constantly grooming herself, and Max has been sleeping more than usual. Am I just being paranoid, or are these symptoms of something that everyone else seems to know about except me? What are some common illnesses that could have early signs I should be looking out for? Please, any advice or experiences would really put my mind at ease. Thanks!

Answer:

Hello! It's great that you're proactive about your furry friend's health. There are several common illnesses in cats and dogs that can be prevented or managed more effectively when caught early.

For both cats and dogs, dental disease is frequently overlooked. Regular teeth cleanings and check-ups can prevent serious complications like gum disease and tooth loss.

In dogs, heartworm disease is another biggie. It can be prevented with regular medication, but untreated can lead to serious heart and lung problems. Similarly, regular blood tests can help spot kidney disease early, which can be managed with dietary changes and medication.

Cats can often suffer from urinary tract issues like feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD). Keeping an eye on their litter box habits and ensuring they stay hydrated can help. In both cats and dogs, obesity is way more common than many think. Maintaining a healthy weight can stave off diabetes, joint issues, and other health problems.

Watch for signs like changes in eating or drinking habits, unusual lethargy, sudden weight changes, or vomiting and diarrhea—they could indicate a more severe issue.

If you notice anything unusual or if it’s been a while since your pet's last check-up, I highly recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet. It’s a wonderful way to address any concerns you might have. Take care!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
