Question:

Weird skin issue on my parents dog

I’m hoping someone here can help because I’m kind of freaking out right now. My parents’ dog, Max, a 7-year-old Golden Retriever, has developed this strange skin issue and I’m not sure what to do. It started as a small, red patch on his back, but over the past week, it's spread and looks really irritated. The weird part is it seems to be slightly oily and flaky, and Max has been scratching at it non-stop. My parents haven’t changed his diet or shampoo recently, so I’m stumped. They live a couple of hours away in a rural area, and the nearest vet isn’t available for another week. Has anyone else experienced something like this or have any advice on how to keep him comfortable until we can get professional help? I feel so helpless and just want to do something to ease his discomfort. Thanks for any advice!

Answer:

Hello there! It sounds like you’re concerned about your parents' dog's skin, and I’m here to help. Dogs can experience a range of skin issues, like rashes, hot spots, dry patches, or bumps, caused by various factors. Common culprits include allergies (to food, pollen, or fleas), infections (bacterial or fungal), or even stress and anxiety, which might lead to excessive licking or chewing.

At home, you can gently examine the dog's skin to see if there are any obvious irritants, such as fleas or ticks. Make sure the dog is not scratching excessively, as this can worsen the condition. You can clean the affected area with a mild, dog-safe antiseptic solution and ensure the dog is well-groomed and flea-free.

However, it’s important to watch for any serious signs, such as sores that don’t heal, severe itching, or a rash that spreads quickly. If the skin appears infected—red, swelling, or has a bad smell—or if your dog seems very uncomfortable, these could be signs of a more serious issue.

I recommend booking a video consult with us at Dial A Vet so we can take a closer look and provide more specific advice tailored to your parents' dog's needs. We’re here to ensure your furry friend gets the best care possible!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
