Question:

Ways to make an e-collar longer?

I’m really in need of some advice. My poor dog just had surgery, and the vet gave us an e-collar to make sure she doesn’t mess with her stitches. The thing is, it doesn’t seem to be doing its job because she can still reach her wound, and I’m worried she’s going to end up with an infection or make things worse. I’ve tried adjusting it to fit her better, but it’s just not long enough. I feel so helpless seeing her uncomfortable and still at risk. Has anyone dealt with this before or have any creative ideas on how to extend it or make something that could work better? Maybe some kind of DIY solution or a specific product you’d recommend? I really appreciate any help or guidance you can offer. Thanks so much!

Answer:

Hello there! It sounds like you’re trying to make your pet's recovery as comfortable as possible, which is great. If you need to extend an e-collar (or "cone"), it’s usually because your pet can still reach the area you’re trying to protect. This often happens with larger pets or those with longer necks.

There are a few at-home tricks you can try:

1. **Foam Padding**: Adding some padding around the edge of the e-collar can increase the length slightly while providing a softer, more comfortable edge. Just be sure to attach it securely and ensure it’s not too heavy.

2. **Layered Collars**: Another approach is to layer another smaller collar underneath the e-collar to offer more support and stability, making it slightly more effective.

3. **Canine Clothing Sleeves**: For some cases, using a pet-safe recovery sleeve or similar clothing can help protect certain areas even if the e-collar isn’t covering them entirely.

Keep an eye out for any signs of discomfort from your pet, like excessive scratching at the cone, agitation, or inability to eat or drink. If your pet still manages to reach the wound or incision site, it could lead to infection or slow down healing. If you notice such issues, it’s time to look for a customized solution.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
