Question:

Vitamin B-12 recommendation for dog

I'm feeling pretty lost and could really use some advice regarding my beloved dog, Max. He's a seven-year-old Labrador, and recently he's been having issues with his energy levels and digestion. Our vet suggested that he might benefit from a vitamin B-12 supplement, but there are so many options out there, and I'm not sure which one would be best for him. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? What brands or types of B-12 have worked well for your dogs? I just want to make sure I'm doing what's best for Max because seeing him like this breaks my heart. Any tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Hello! It's great that you're considering the health and nutrition of your dog. Vitamin B-12, also known as cobalamin, is an essential nutrient that plays a crucial role in your dog's nerve function, cell production, and overall metabolism.

Dogs usually get enough Vitamin B-12 through their diet, especially if they are eating a balanced commercial dog food. However, if your dog has gastrointestinal issues like chronic diarrhea, a pancreatic disorder, or certain types of anemia, they might not be absorbing enough B-12 from their food.

You might notice signs like loss of appetite, lethargy, weight loss, or gastrointestinal upsets if there's a B-12 deficiency. If you're concerned about these symptoms, it’s important to first talk with a veterinarian who can assess your dog's needs and possibly recommend testing for B-12 deficiency.

At home, ensuring your dog is eating a high-quality, balanced diet is a great first step. If you’re considering supplementation, it’s crucial to do so under veterinary guidance, as giving excess amounts may not be necessary and could complicate matters.

Keep an eye out for signs like severe lethargy, persistent vomiting, or any drastic behavioral changes, as these could indicate a more serious issue requiring prompt veterinary attention.

I’d recommend booking a video consult with us on Dial A Vet so we can explore your dog’s specific needs and provide personalized advice. Looking forward to helping you and your furry friend!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
