Vetalog Side effects. Are these common?

I’m freaking out a bit and could really use some advice. My dog, Max, got a Vetalog shot yesterday afternoon for his allergies, and he’s been acting really off since then. He was his usual bouncy self before, but now he’s just lying around, not interested in his toys or even treats, and it’s so unlike him. He also seems a bit shaky and panting more than usual, even though we’re just chilling in the living room and it’s not even warm in here. Is this normal after Vetalog, or should I call the vet ASAP? I don’t know if I’m overreacting, but I’m really worried about my little guy. Any advice or similar experiences would be super helpful!

Answer

I completely understand why you're worried about Vetalog side effects. Vetalog is a corticosteroid often used to treat allergies, inflammation, and other conditions in pets. While it's quite effective, like many medications, it can come with side effects. Common ones include increased thirst and hunger, more frequent urination, and potential for weight gain. These are generally manageable and often decrease as your pet's body adjusts to the medication.

In some cases, you might notice more serious side effects, like vomiting, diarrhea, or noticeable behavioral changes such as lethargy or restlessness. If you observe signs like these, it's important to consult a vet promptly.

To help your pet at home, ensure they have access to fresh water and maintain regular meal schedules to manage increased hunger. Keep an eye on their activity levels, and try to maintain daily exercise to counteract potential weight gain.

Watch for any persistent or severe symptoms, such as a significant change in appetite, mood alterations, or gastrointestinal issues, as these could indicate a more serious reaction that needs veterinary attention.

If you're seeing anything that worries you or if symptoms persist, it's a good idea to book a video consult with us here at Dial A Vet for more personalized advice.
