Question:

Vet saying my kitten has panleukopenia but I am doubting this diagnosis.

I’m really in need of some advice and maybe a little support right now. I took my kitten, Leo, to the vet yesterday because he’s been lethargic and not eating much. The vet diagnosed him with panleukopenia, and I’m freaking out. But here’s the thing—I’m having a hard time believing it’s true. Leo’s only been around his vaccinated mom and hasn’t had any contact with other cats that we know of. His symptoms started just a day after his vaccination, which makes me wonder if there’s a connection. The vet ran some tests, but I didn’t get to see the results myself. They did give him fluids and some supportive care, but I’ve read online that sometimes reactions to vaccines can look similar to panleukopenia. Am I just in denial here, or is it possible the vet might be wrong? I hate seeing my little guy so down, and I just want to be sure I’m doing the right thing for him. Any experience or similar stories would really help me right now.

Answer:

Hello there,

I’m sorry to hear that you’re concerned about your kitten’s health. Panleukopenia, also known as feline distemper, is a serious viral infection that can be quite concerning. It mainly affects kittens and can cause symptoms like fever, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, and a lack of appetite. Your vet likely diagnosed your kitten based on these clinical symptoms and possibly some blood tests showing a low white blood cell count.

However, if you’re unsure about the diagnosis, it’s perfectly fine to seek clarification. Other conditions, such as intestinal parasites or severe bacterial infections, can sometimes mimic similar signs in kittens, which might be causing your doubt.

At home, ensure your kitten stays hydrated and comfortable. Offering small, frequent amounts of bland food can help if they’re willing to eat. Keep the living area clean to minimize infection risk, and isolate them from other pets if possible.

Watch for signs like persistent vomiting, severe diarrhea, or extreme lethargy, as these may need immediate attention.

It would be helpful to discuss your concerns with another vet who can evaluate your kitten’s symptoms closely to confirm the diagnosis. Booking a video consult with Dial A Vet can provide you with peace of mind and further insights into caring for your little one.

Take care and I wish your kitten a swift recovery.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
