Vestibular issues days after cat got Claro put in ears then flushed out

I'm really in need of some advice or reassurance right now. A few days ago, I took my sweet old cat, Muffin, to the vet for an ear infection and they treated her with Claro. Everything seemed fine at first, but then they flushed out her ears and now she's having some concerning symptoms. She's been stumbling a lot and seems really disoriented, almost like she's dizzy. I did some reading and I think she might be having vestibular issues, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone else experienced something like this with their cat after ear treatments? Muffin's usually so lively, and it's heartbreaking to see her like this. Any insights or similar experiences would really help put my mind at ease. Thanks in advance, everyone.

Answer

Hello! I'm sorry to hear that your kitty is experiencing vestibular issues; that must be quite concerning. Vestibular problems in cats can manifest as head tilting, unsteady walking, or even falling over, which can understandably be alarming as a pet parent.

It’s possible that the recent ear cleaning and treatment could have irritated your cat's ears or inner ear structures. Claro is often used to treat ear infections, which could mean your cat's ears were already sensitive. The flushing might have caused a temporary imbalance, or there might be residual liquid affecting their inner ear, leading to dizziness.

At home, ensure your cat’s environment is safe; remove anything they might bump into and provide comfy spots for them to rest. Make sure they have easy access to their food, water, and litter box, avoiding any high or difficult-to-reach places.

Keep an eye out for symptoms such as persistent vomiting, difficulty eating or drinking, or extreme lethargy, as these could indicate a more serious issue requiring immediate veterinary attention.

If the symptoms don’t improve within a day or two, or if they worsen, it would be wise to consult with a vet to ensure there’s nothing more concerning going on. I'd recommend booking a video consult with one of our veterinarians on Dial A Vet to get personalized advice and peace of mind. Take care!
