Thanks for reaching out with your concern. Having a picky eater with kidney disease can certainly be challenging, but with a little care, you can help manage your pet's needs.
Dogs with kidney disease often have a reduced appetite due to nausea or changes in how their body processes nutrients. It's important to offer a diet low in protein, phosphorus, and sodium, as these can help support kidney function and reduce the workload on the kidneys. You might find that warming their food slightly can enhance aroma and make it more appealing. Feeding small, frequent meals might also encourage eating without overwhelming their system.
Keep an eye out for signs that could indicate a more serious issue, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, changes in water consumption, or sudden weight loss. These symptoms may mean your dog's condition requires more immediate attention.
Remember, each dog's needs are unique, and it's important to tailor your care to your pet's specific situation. I recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our veterinarians at Dial A Vet, where we can give you more personalized advice and discuss a diet that supports your dog's kidney health. We're here to help guide you every step of the way.
VERY picky dog w kidney disease
I'm really at a loss and would appreciate any advice. My sweet 8-year-old Labrador, Max, has been diagnosed with kidney disease, and it's been a challenging journey so far. The biggest issue we're facing is that he's become incredibly picky with his food ever since the diagnosis. I've tried everything I can think of to make his meals more enticing – switching brands, cooking chicken and rice, even hand-feeding him – but some days he's just not interested. I know how important it is for him to stick to a kidney-friendly diet, but I'm worried about him not eating enough and losing weight. Has anyone else experienced this with their pets? I just feel so helpless seeing him not enjoy his meals anymore. Any tips or suggestions would be so appreciated.
